Earlier this summer, Appanoose County, Iowa, faced a heartbreaking loss. Seventeen-year-old Ayden Beeson, a high school student and recently crowned Prom King, went missing while swimming at Rathbun Lake. Tragically, just an hour after being reported missing, rescuers recovered him from the water. The Appanoose County Sheriff’s Office responded immediately. A 911 caller had reported a possible drowning, and deputies teamed up with the Appanoose County Water Rescue unit to search tirelessly. Sadly, Ayden was found in 15 to 20 feet of water and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Ayden was widely admired throughout the Centerville School District. A leader on the football team and an accomplished tennis player, he had recently been voted Prom King. Known for his kindness and warmth, Ayden left a lasting impression on everyone around him. Superintendent Mark Taylor said, “Such a great kid lost in the prime of his life is devastating for our community, for his family, and for the lives he was going to impact. He was kind to everyone. There wasn’t a single person he couldn’t be nice to.”
The community quickly came together to honor Ayden’s memory. Centerville Community Schools posted a heartfelt message expressing their deep sorrow, highlighting his active role at school and the positive impact of his genuine kindness on both staff and students.
Beyond his achievements in sports, Ayden inspired his peers with his friendliness, leadership, and dedication. Though his life was tragically cut short, his legacy continues to resonate within the community, a reminder of the difference one young life can make.
Rest in peace, Ayden Beeson.
